The birth of a virtual idol shaped by human thought, between art, identity and digital expression

NORA ノラ is the first virtual idol made in Italy, brought to life with a real human voice and a handcrafted approach that merges music, animation and digital experimentation.
Conceived and produced by Maga Animation Studio, the project explores identity, movement and emotion through a CG music video, created without the use of generative AI.
NORA made her debut not just as a musical act, but as a character: our studio’s manifesto of art and technology.
Her first single, "Beat of a Romance / Cha Cha Cha", is a mashup that blends a fresh electropop composition with reimagined fragments of a 1985 Italo dance anthem, bridging memory and vision, past and future.
This production was the result of a two-year artistic and technological journey, where every phase, from concept art to final rendering, was guided by a philosophy rooted in human-centered creativity. Our animation team chose to work exclusively with key-frame animation to preserve the expressive nuance of the artists and authenticity of each gesture.
Choreography was developed in collaboration with professional dancers, whose performances served as visual references to shape NORA’s movements with emotional depth and stylistic coherence.

Visually, the project embraced a vaporwave aesthetic, reinterpreted through a contemporary lens. The environments and lighting were crafted using Unreal Engine, not as a game engine, but as a cinematic platform. This allowed for real-time experimentation with colors, textures and dynamic lighting, resulting in a stylized look that bridges illustration and CGI. The use of Path Tracer rendering and custom camera filters added a tactile quality to the visuals, enhancing the emotional resonance of each scene.
The music video narrates NORA’s journey through a dreamlike, post-digital realm, where she confronts her alter ego in a symbolic exploration of identity and transformation. Every element, from choreography to visual effects, was designed to evoke emotion and amplify the narrative. VFX elements such as holograms, laser transitions and visual distortions were inspired by the stage design of 1980s and 1990s concerts, reinforcing the nostalgic yet futuristic tone of the piece.
